"Take
the Iditarod Read-A-Thon Challenge 2009" was a grand success!
With 98% of the student body participating, students and staff
together logged 173,032 minutes read in 14 days. Great job
readers!!!
The total funds raised for Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School were just shy of $6000, and since many of the
prizes were donated, every dollar raised directly benefits our students and school.
Thank you to our many volunteers for your endless and tireless support. This event could not have happened
if it weren't for your time and efforts. Many, many thanks!!!
We must also thank our sponsors of this year's Read-A-Thon. These are the local businesses that showed their
generous support for our school...Alpine Bank, Baskin-Robbins, City of Durango Rec Center and Chapman Hill,
Durango Dog Ranch, Horace Mann, Kiwanis Club of Durango, Maria's
Bookshop and Mountain Boy Sledworks of Silverton. Their
donations, along with several anonymous donations, helped to provide
great prizes for the
students efforts in reading and funding raising. Thank you very much for your generous support!
Above all, we thank each and every student, sponsor, and family for their participation by contributing in
whatever way they were able. Everyone's effort in reading and sponsorship, large and small, add up to a successful team.
With Sincere Thanks,
The FLM Parent Teacher Organization

Mission
Statement:
We believe that all children have the ability to learn
when provided with an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. This means:
1) each child shall grow emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically.
He/she will feel respected and experience success; 2) instruction will
be based on the use of effective teaching techniques that will meet the
individual needs of each child; 3) our curriculum will be developmentally
sequenced, using materials that are chosen to match the district academic
standards to meet the present and future needs of the children.
Educational
Program:
Literacy instruction includes small, flexible groups to increase individualization.
Math and science lessons are structured to encourage children to learn by doing,
not just by passively listening. Our children benefit from learning with a
group of educators with complementary abilities, skills, and special talents.
Special
Services:
Through the collaborative efforts of a special education teachers, several
literacy teachers (Title I), an Independent Study teacher (gifted and talented),
and a full-time counselor, we address the special needs of all our students.
Fort Lewis Mesa Staff
Fort Lewis Mesa's teaching staff includes 12 classroom teachers and special
teachers for music, physical education, art, resource, counselor, media specialist,
Independent Study and Title I reading. Our secretary, health aide, custodians,
cooks, instructional aides, and our Partner in Education (PIE) coordinator
provide additional support for our students and their families.
Special
Programs or Activities:
A variety of special programs and activities are provided at Fort Lewis Mesa.
Some of these are: Student Council, Kid's Kamp after-school enrichment program,
student recognition programs, full day preschool, service learning projects,
Creativity
Festivity,
new student orientation, academic competitions, and after school tutoring.
Project Read, Study Buddies and the Study Connection also enhance opportunities
for children to learn in a supportive environment.
Behavior
Expectations:
We believe that school-wide discipline should be based on the notion of setting
high expectations. Our children deserve nothing less. Fort Lewis Mesa's staff
has adopted a zero tolerance policy for disruptive or violent behavior and
consequences are strictly enforced. Our discipline policies are in harmony
with creating a positive, nurturing environment by establishing positive reinforcement
for desired behaviors and by recognizing student's strengths and achievements.
